When Life Takes an Unexpected Turn, Trusted Guidance Makes All the Difference — Choose Calfee Insurance.

Life is full of unexpected moments. A storm may damage your home, a vehicle accident may interrupt your daily routine, or another covered event may occur when you least expect it. While no one can predict these situations, having the right insurance coverage—and a trusted insurance agency to guide you—can make a meaningful difference during challenging times.

Insurance is about more than simply having a policy. It's about knowing you have experienced professionals available to help you understand your coverage and navigate the process when you need assistance most.

When a covered loss occurs, it's natural to have questions. What should you do first? Who should you contact? What information will you need? Understanding the claims process before an emergency happens can help reduce uncertainty and make the experience less overwhelming.

One of the first steps after a covered incident is reporting the claim to your insurance carrier as soon as possible. Providing accurate information about what happened and documenting any damage, when it is safe to do so, can help the claims process begin more efficiently. Photos, videos, receipts, and other records may also be helpful depending on the situation.

Once the claim is reported, the insurance company begins reviewing the details. An adjuster may inspect the damage, gather additional information, and evaluate the claim based on the terms and conditions of your policy. Every claim is different, so the review process and timeline may vary depending on the circumstances.

Throughout this process, communication is important. Responding promptly to requests for information and asking questions when something is unclear can help keep your claim moving forward. Understanding your policy, deductibles, and available coverage can also provide greater confidence during what may already be a stressful time.

This is where working with a trusted independent insurance agency can make a difference.

At Calfee Insurance, we believe our role goes beyond helping clients purchase insurance. Since 1980, our family-run agency has been committed to providing personalized service and helping Massachusetts families better understand their insurance protection.

While claims are handled by your insurance carrier, our team is here to answer questions, explain your coverage, and help guide you through the process. We know that unexpected events can be stressful, and our goal is to help make the experience as straightforward as possible by providing knowledgeable support when you need it.

We also encourage policyholders to review their insurance coverage regularly—not just after a claim. Life changes, home improvements, new vehicles, and other milestones may affect your insurance needs over time. Regular policy reviews can help ensure your coverage continues to align with your current situation and provide an opportunity to discuss any questions before an unexpected event occurs.

Preparing for life's uncertainties doesn't mean expecting the worst. It means having confidence that you're protected and knowing you have a trusted team to turn to when challenges arise.

Because insurance is about more than policies and paperwork.

It's about people, relationships, and having someone in your corner when life doesn't go according to plan.

What to Expect During the Insurance Claims Process — with Calfee Insurance

6/30/2026

No one wants to experience an event that leads to an insurance claim. Whether it's damage to your home, a car accident, or another covered loss, these situations can be stressful and often happen without warning. While every claim is unique, understanding the general claims process can help you feel more prepared and confident if you ever need to use your insurance.

Knowing what to expect before a loss occurs is just as important as having the right insurance coverage.

Step 1: Report the Claim as Soon as Possible

After a covered incident, one of the first steps is notifying your insurance company. Prompt reporting allows the claims process to begin sooner and helps the insurer gather important information while details are still fresh.

When reporting a claim, you'll typically be asked to provide basic information about what happened, when it occurred, and the type of damage or loss involved. If it's safe to do so, taking photos or videos of the damage can also help document the situation.

For auto accidents, exchanging information with other involved parties and, when appropriate, obtaining a police report can also be valuable. For homeowners claims, it's important to take reasonable steps to help prevent additional damage, such as covering a damaged roof with a tarp if it can be done safely.

The more accurate and complete the information you provide, the smoother the process can be.

Step 2: The Insurance Company Reviews the Claim

After your claim is reported, the insurance company begins reviewing the information.

Depending on the type of claim, an insurance adjuster may be assigned to evaluate the damage, review documentation, inspect the property or vehicle, and determine how the policy applies to the loss.

During this stage, you may be asked to provide additional information or supporting documents. Keeping records of receipts, repair estimates, photos, and communications can help keep everything organized throughout the process.

The review is designed to determine whether the loss is covered under the terms of your policy and what benefits may be available based on your coverage.

Every claim is different, so the amount of time needed for review may vary depending on the circumstances.

Step 3: Communication Is Key

One of the best ways to help the claims process move smoothly is by staying in communication.

Responding promptly to requests for information, asking questions when something is unclear, and keeping copies of important documents can make the experience less stressful.

It's perfectly normal to have questions during a claim. Understanding your coverage, deductible, repair process, or next steps can help you make informed decisions as your claim progresses.

This is one reason many people value working with an independent insurance agency. Having someone available to help explain the process and answer general questions can provide additional confidence during an already challenging time.

Step 4: Moving Forward After the Claim

Once the review is complete, the insurance company will explain the outcome of your claim and the next steps based on your policy and the circumstances of the loss.

Depending on the type of claim, this may involve vehicle repairs, home repairs, replacement of covered property, or other covered benefits. The specific outcome will depend on the terms, conditions, limits, and deductibles outlined in your insurance policy.

After a claim is resolved, it's also a good opportunity to review your insurance coverage. Major life events, home improvements, vehicle changes, or other circumstances may affect your insurance needs over time.

At Calfee Insurance, we understand that filing an insurance claim can feel overwhelming. Since 1980, our family-run agency has been helping Massachusetts families navigate their insurance needs with personalized service and trusted guidance.

While claims are handled by your insurance carrier, our team is here to help answer questions, explain your coverage, and provide support throughout the process. We believe that understanding what to expect can make a difficult situation a little less stressful.

Insurance is about more than having a policy—it's about having a trusted partner when life doesn't go as planned.

Because when the unexpected happens, you shouldn't have to face it alone.

Rising Replacement Costs Make Regular Policy Reviews More Important Than Ever — Choose Calfee Insurance.

6/29/2026

Picture
For many homeowners, insurance is something they purchase when they buy a home and rarely think about again unless it's time to renew. However, one of the most important reasons to review your homeowners insurance regularly is something many people don't see every day: rising replacement costs.

While your home's market value often gets the most attention, the cost to rebuild your home after a covered loss is equally important. As construction costs continue to change, reviewing your policy can help ensure your coverage continues to reflect your home's current rebuilding needs.

Replacement cost is different from market value. Market value includes factors such as the location of your home, neighborhood demand, and the local real estate market. Replacement cost, on the other hand, is the estimated amount it would take to rebuild your home using similar materials and workmanship.

Over the past several years, the cost of construction materials and skilled labor has continued to increase. Lumber, roofing materials, electrical components, plumbing supplies, and other building products may cost more today than they did when you first purchased your policy. Labor shortages and updated building codes can also contribute to higher rebuilding expenses.

In addition to rising construction costs, homeowners often make improvements that increase the value of their property. Kitchen remodels, bathroom renovations, finished basements, home additions, or upgraded flooring may improve both the comfort and value of your home. These changes can also affect what it would cost to rebuild your home if it were damaged by a covered event.

That's why reviewing your homeowners insurance policy periodically is so important.

A policy review gives you the opportunity to better understand your current coverage, discuss recent improvements, and determine whether your coverage limits still align with your home's rebuilding costs. Even if no changes are needed, reviewing your policy can provide valuable peace of mind and help you understand the protection you have in place.

It's also a good time to ask questions about deductibles, optional coverages, and any changes in your lifestyle that may affect your insurance needs. Insurance isn't a one-time decision—it should evolve as your home and circumstances change.

At Calfee Insurance, we've been helping Massachusetts homeowners protect their homes since 1980. As an independent insurance agency, we work with multiple insurance carriers to provide more options, competitive pricing, and personalized coverage solutions.

Our team is here to help you review your homeowners policy, answer your questions, and make sure you understand your coverage. Whether you've recently completed home improvements or simply haven't reviewed your policy in several years, now is an excellent time to take another look.

Your home is one of your most valuable investments, and protecting it requires more than simply having insurance. It means making sure your coverage keeps pace with changing rebuilding costs and your evolving needs.

A simple policy review today could help you feel more confident about tomorrow.

Home Replacement Costs Continue to Rise: Should You Review Your Homeowners Insurance Policy? — with Calfee Insurance

6/29/2026

Your Home May Cost More to Rebuild Than You Think

For most homeowners, a house is more than just a place to live—it's one of the largest financial investments they'll ever make. While many people pay attention to their home's market value, there's another number that's just as important: the cost to rebuild it.

Replacement cost refers to the estimated expense of rebuilding your home using similar materials and workmanship after a covered loss. Unlike market value, which is influenced by factors such as location and real estate demand, replacement cost is affected by construction expenses.

Over the past several years, the cost of building materials, labor, and construction services has continued to change. As a result, rebuilding a home today may cost significantly more than it did just a few years ago.

If your homeowners insurance policy hasn't been reviewed recently, it's worth taking a closer look to ensure your coverage still reflects your home's current rebuilding needs.

Why Replacement Costs Continue to Change

Several factors can influence the cost of rebuilding a home.

Construction materials such as lumber, roofing products, drywall, windows, and plumbing components can fluctuate in price over time. Labor costs have also increased in many areas as skilled contractors remain in high demand.

In addition, local building codes may require repairs or reconstruction to meet updated standards following a covered loss. These changes can add to rebuilding expenses that homeowners may not have anticipated when they originally purchased their policy.

Home improvements can also affect replacement costs. Renovating a kitchen, updating bathrooms, finishing a basement, or adding square footage often increases the value of rebuilding the home.

These factors don't necessarily change your home's market value in the same way, but they can have a meaningful impact on what it would cost to reconstruct your property after significant damage.

That's why replacement cost should be reviewed periodically rather than assumed to remain the same year after year.

Why Reviewing Your Insurance Policy Matters

Many homeowners purchase insurance when they buy their home and rarely think about it again unless it's time to renew. However, insurance needs can change as your home and the construction market evolve.

A policy review provides an opportunity to better understand your homeowners insurance coverage, including coverage limits, deductibles, and available options. It also allows homeowners to discuss any recent renovations, upgrades, or changes that may affect their protection needs.

Regular reviews can help answer important questions such as:
  • Has your home been remodeled or expanded?
  • Have replacement costs increased since your last review?
  • Do your current coverage limits still align with your home's rebuilding costs?
  • Have your insurance needs changed because of new belongings or lifestyle changes?

Reviewing your policy doesn't necessarily mean making changes, but it does help ensure you understand your current coverage and whether it continues to fit your situation.

Being proactive today can help reduce surprises if you ever need to file a claim after a covered loss.

Review Your Coverage with Calfee Insurance

Our team can review your current homeowners policy, answer your questions, and help you better understand whether your coverage continues to align with your home's current rebuilding costs and your long-term goals.

Insurance isn't just about protecting what you own today—it's about preparing for tomorrow.

Construction costs will continue to change, and your insurance coverage should keep pace with those changes.

A simple policy review today can provide greater confidence that your home is protected if the unexpected happens.

Because when it comes to protecting your biggest investment, staying up to date matters.

The Right Auto Insurance Coverage Helps Protect You When the Unexpected Happens — with Calfee Insurance.

Every time you get behind the wheel, you make countless decisions to help keep yourself, your passengers, and others on the road safe. From obeying traffic laws to staying alert in changing road conditions, responsible driving plays a major role in reducing risk. However, even the safest drivers can encounter unexpected situations.

Accidents, severe weather, distracted drivers, road hazards, and other unforeseen events can happen without warning. While no one expects these situations to occur, preparing for them is an important part of responsible vehicle ownership. This is where auto insurance becomes an essential part of protecting your financial future.

Many people view auto insurance as a legal requirement, but its value goes far beyond meeting state regulations. Auto insurance is designed to help provide financial protection when covered incidents occur. Rather than facing certain expenses entirely on your own, insurance can help provide support when unexpected events disrupt your plans.

Every driver faces unique risks. Heavy traffic, changing weather conditions, construction zones, and crowded parking lots all present situations that can increase the likelihood of an accident. Even when you do everything right, other drivers' actions can create circumstances beyond your control.

This is why having appropriate coverage matters. Insurance can help provide a financial safety net that supports recovery after covered losses. Whether dealing with vehicle damage, liability-related concerns, or other covered situations, the right policy can help reduce financial stress during challenging moments.

Understanding your coverage is just as important as having coverage. Many drivers purchase a policy and rarely review it again. However, insurance needs often change over time. A new vehicle, changes in driving habits, family circumstances, or financial goals can all affect the type and amount of protection that may be appropriate.

Regular policy reviews provide an opportunity to better understand your coverage, deductibles, limits, and available options. They can also help ensure that your insurance continues to align with your current needs.
Preparing for the unexpected does not mean expecting something to go wrong. Instead, it means recognizing that life is unpredictable and taking proactive steps to protect yourself before challenges arise. Auto insurance is one of the most important tools drivers have for managing those risks responsibly.

At Calfee Insurance, we understand that every driver has different needs and priorities. Since 1980, our family-run agency has helped Massachusetts drivers explore insurance solutions designed to protect their vehicles, finances, and peace of mind.

We believe that insurance should do more than satisfy a requirement. It should help drivers feel confident knowing they have protection in place when they need it most. Our team works with clients to review coverage options, answer questions, and help ensure they understand the protection available to them.

No one can predict what will happen on the road tomorrow. However, drivers can take steps today to prepare for life's uncertainties.

Because confidence behind the wheel starts with knowing you're protected.

Share the Road, Save Lives: Why Road Safety and Auto Insurance Matter — with Calfee Insurance

6/26/2026

Every day, drivers share the road with motorcycles, bicycles, scooters, and other small vehicles. Whether commuting to work, running errands, or enjoying a weekend drive, motorists encounter a variety of road users traveling at different speeds and with different levels of protection.

While modern vehicles offer numerous safety features, operators of smaller vehicles often have far less physical protection in the event of an accident. This is why awareness, patience, and responsible driving are essential for everyone on the road.

Road safety is not just about following traffic laws. It is about recognizing that every person on the road deserves to arrive at their destination safely.

One of the most important habits drivers can develop is staying aware of their surroundings. Small vehicles can sometimes be more difficult to see than larger cars and trucks, especially when changing lanes, turning, or navigating busy intersections. Motorcycles, bicycles, and scooters can easily enter blind spots if drivers are not paying close attention.

Before changing lanes or making a turn, drivers should always check mirrors, look over their shoulder when appropriate, and remain alert to nearby traffic. Taking a few extra moments to confirm the road is clear can help prevent accidents and create a safer environment for everyone.

Maintaining a safe following distance is another important part of sharing the road responsibly. Small vehicles may need additional space to maneuver around obstacles, road hazards, or changing traffic conditions. Giving them room helps reduce the likelihood of sudden braking situations and allows everyone more time to react when conditions change.

Patience also plays a major role in road safety. Drivers may occasionally encounter cyclists, scooters, or motorcycles traveling at different speeds. While it can be tempting to rush past or follow too closely, giving these road users adequate space and respecting their presence helps reduce risks and promotes safer travel for all.

Road conditions can create additional challenges as well. Rain, strong winds, uneven pavement, and reduced visibility often affect smaller vehicles more significantly than passenger cars. During these situations, drivers should exercise extra caution and remain aware that cyclists and motorcyclists may need more room to navigate safely.

While safe driving practices help reduce risks, accidents can still happen. Even the most cautious drivers can encounter unexpected situations caused by weather, road conditions, distractions from other motorists, or unforeseen circumstances.

This is why auto insurance remains an important part of responsible vehicle ownership.

Auto insurance is designed to help provide financial protection when covered incidents occur. Depending on the policy and circumstances, coverage may help address vehicle damage, liability-related expenses, and other covered losses that can result from an accident.

Many drivers purchase insurance because it is required by law, but its value extends beyond meeting legal requirements. Insurance can serve as a financial safety net that helps drivers navigate unexpected events with greater confidence.

It is also important to review coverage periodically. Vehicle values, personal circumstances, driving habits, and insurance needs can change over time. A policy review provides an opportunity to better understand your coverage, evaluate protection options, and ensure your insurance continues to align with your current situation.

At Calfee Insurance, we understand that protecting yourself on the road involves more than simply carrying an insurance policy. It begins with safe driving habits, responsible decision-making, and a commitment to looking out for others who share the roadway.

Since 1980, our family-run agency has helped Massachusetts drivers explore insurance solutions designed to protect their vehicles, finances, and peace of mind. We work with clients to review coverage options, answer questions, and help them make informed decisions about their protection.

Every driver plays a role in creating safer roads. By staying alert, respecting smaller vehicles, and maintaining the right insurance coverage, motorists can help protect themselves and others while traveling.

Because safer roads benefit everyone.

The Right Boat Insurance Coverage Helps Protect More Than Your Vessel; It Helps Protect Your Adventures — Trust Calfee Insurance.

Picture
For many Massachusetts residents, boating is more than a hobby. It is a lifestyle that brings families and friends together to enjoy the beauty of the water, explore the coastline, and create lasting memories. Whether it's a weekend fishing trip, a sunset cruise around Cape Cod, or a day spent with loved ones on the water, every boating adventure represents time, effort, and investment.

While boat owners often focus on maintaining their vessel and preparing for the boating season, it is equally important to think about protecting the adventures that come with it. That's where boat insurance plays an important role.

Owning a boat comes with responsibilities, both on and off the water. Regular maintenance, safety checks, and responsible operation all contribute to a safer boating experience. However, even the most careful boat owners can encounter unexpected situations. Weather conditions can change quickly, accidents can happen, and unforeseen events can create challenges that may be difficult to predict.

Boat insurance is designed to help provide financial protection when covered losses occur. While no one wants to think about accidents, damage, or other unexpected events, having coverage in place before something happens can help provide greater peace of mind.

Many people think of insurance as protection for a physical asset, but the value of coverage often extends beyond the vessel itself. A boat represents opportunities for recreation, family gatherings, and personal enjoyment. Protecting the boat helps protect the experiences and memories associated with it.

Whether you're cruising along the Cape Cod coastline, spending the day fishing, or enjoying a weekend getaway on the water, the goal is to focus on the experience rather than worrying about potential setbacks. Knowing you have coverage in place can help provide confidence while enjoying your time on the water.

It's also important for boat owners to review their insurance coverage periodically. Changes in vessel value, upgrades, added equipment, or different boating habits may affect insurance needs over time. A policy review can help ensure that coverage continues to align with your current circumstances and boating lifestyle.

Just as boat owners perform routine inspections and maintenance, reviewing insurance protection should be part of regular boating preparation. Understanding your policy, deductibles, limits, and available coverage options can help you make informed decisions about protecting your investment.

At Calfee Insurance, we understand the important role boating plays in the lives of many Massachusetts families. Since 1980, our family-run agency has helped clients explore insurance solutions designed to protect what matters most. We work with boat owners to review coverage options, answer questions, and help them better understand their protection choices.

Every adventure begins with preparation. Safe boating practices, proper maintenance, and the right insurance coverage all work together to help create a more enjoyable experience on the water.

Because protecting your boat is about more than protecting a vessel.

It's about protecting the memories, experiences, and adventures that come with it.

Boat Smart. Stay Safe. Enjoy the Water. Why Boating Safety and Insurance Matter — with Calfee Insurance

6/25/2026

Enjoying the Water Starts with Preparation

For many Massachusetts residents, especially those living near Cape Cod and the Islands, boating is one of the best parts of summer. Whether it's a day of fishing, a family cruise, watersports, or simply enjoying the coastline, spending time on the water creates memories that last a lifetime.

While boating offers relaxation and recreation, it also comes with responsibilities. Just as drivers prepare before heading out on the road, boat owners should take steps to prepare before leaving the dock.

Preparation helps improve safety, reduce risks, and make boating experiences more enjoyable for everyone onboard. Simple actions such as checking weather conditions, reviewing navigation plans, and ensuring that safety equipment is available can help boaters respond more effectively to unexpected situations.

Many incidents on the water can be avoided through awareness and preparation. Taking a few minutes before departure can help create a safer environment for passengers, other boaters, and everyone sharing the waterways.

Safe boating is not just about following regulations. It is about protecting yourself, your passengers, and your investment.

Important Boating and Water Safety Tips

Water conditions can change quickly, which is why safety should always remain a priority.

One of the most important boating safety practices is ensuring that properly fitted life jackets are available for everyone onboard. Life jackets remain one of the most effective pieces of safety equipment and can make a significant difference during emergencies.

Boat owners should also inspect their vessel regularly. Checking fuel systems, batteries, navigation lights, communication devices, and other essential equipment before departure can help identify potential issues before they become serious problems.

Weather awareness is equally important. Conditions that appear calm at departure can change rapidly, especially in coastal areas. Reviewing marine forecasts and remaining alert to changing weather conditions can help boaters make informed decisions throughout their trip.

Operators should also ensure they understand local navigation rules and remain attentive while underway. Maintaining safe speeds, avoiding distractions, and watching for other vessels, swimmers, and changing water conditions all contribute to safer boating experiences.

Emergency preparedness should not be overlooked. Carrying first-aid supplies, signaling devices, emergency contacts, and communication equipment can help boaters respond more effectively if unexpected situations occur.

While no safety measure can eliminate every risk, consistent preparation can help reduce many common boating hazards.

Why Boat Insurance Is an Important Part of Protection

Many boat owners invest considerable time and money into purchasing and maintaining their vessels. However, some may not fully consider the importance of reviewing their insurance coverage.

Just as homeowners insurance helps protect a home and auto insurance helps protect a vehicle, boat insurance can help provide financial protection for covered losses involving watercraft.

Unexpected situations can happen both on and off the water. Accidents, collisions, storms, theft, vandalism, and certain types of damage can create significant expenses. Depending on the policy and coverage selected, insurance may help provide financial support when covered incidents occur.

Understanding your policy is an important part of responsible ownership. Coverage limits, deductibles, liability protection, and available options may vary depending on the vessel and policy structure.

Reviewing coverage periodically is also important because boating needs can change over time. Upgrades, equipment additions, changing usage patterns, or purchasing a different vessel may affect insurance needs.

A policy review can help boat owners better understand their protection and determine whether their coverage continues to align with their current circumstances.

Preparation on the water should include both safety planning and financial protection.

Protect Your Adventures with Calfee Insurance

At Calfee Insurance, we understand that boats are more than recreational vehicles. They represent family traditions, summer adventures, and valuable investments.

Since 1980, our family-run agency has helped Massachusetts residents protect what matters most. We work with clients to review insurance options, answer questions, and help them better understand the coverage available for their unique needs.

Whether you own a fishing boat, sailboat, personal watercraft, or recreational vessel, understanding your insurance protection is an important part of enjoying your time on the water with confidence.

Boating season should be focused on making memories, exploring the coastline, and enjoying time with family and friends—not worrying about unexpected setbacks.

By combining safe boating practices with appropriate insurance protection, boat owners can help prepare for the unexpected while making the most of every day on the water.

Because every great adventure starts with preparation.

Every Homeowner Should Make Fire Safety and Insurance Reviews Part of Their Protection Plan — Choose Calfee Insurance.

6/24/2026

Picture
Protecting a home involves more than locking doors and performing routine maintenance. It also means preparing for risks that could have a significant impact on your property, belongings, and financial future. Among those risks, fire remains one of the most serious concerns homeowners face.

While many residential fires can be prevented, they can occur unexpectedly and often cause extensive damage. This is why every homeowner should make both fire safety and insurance reviews an important part of their overall protection plan.

Fire safety begins with awareness. Small preventive measures can help reduce risks and improve household safety. One of the most important steps is ensuring that smoke alarms are installed in appropriate locations throughout the home and tested regularly. Working smoke alarms provide early warning and can give families valuable time to respond during an emergency.

Homeowners should also pay attention to electrical safety. Damaged cords, overloaded outlets, and outdated wiring can increase fire risks. Scheduling inspections when necessary and addressing electrical concerns promptly can help create a safer living environment.

Kitchen safety is another critical area. Cooking-related incidents remain one of the most common causes of residential fires. Staying attentive while cooking, keeping flammable materials away from heat sources, and maintaining clean cooking surfaces can help reduce potential hazards.

Creating a family fire escape plan is equally important. Every member of the household should know multiple exit routes and a designated meeting location outside the home. Practicing the plan periodically helps ensure everyone knows what to do in an emergency.

While prevention is essential, not every fire can be avoided. This is why homeowners insurance plays a vital role in protecting against the financial impact of unexpected events.

Insurance is designed to help provide financial protection when covered losses occur. A fire can result in significant repair costs, damage to personal belongings, and disruptions to daily life. Having appropriate coverage in place before a loss occurs can help homeowners navigate these challenges more effectively.

Unfortunately, many homeowners do not review their insurance policies regularly. As homes change over time through renovations, additions, increased property values, or rising construction costs, insurance needs may change as well. A policy that provided adequate protection several years ago may benefit from a review today.

Regular insurance reviews help homeowners better understand their coverage, policy limits, deductibles, and available protection options. These conversations provide an opportunity to ensure that coverage continues to align with current circumstances and goals.

At Calfee Insurance, we believe that preparation is one of the most effective ways to protect what matters most. Since 1980, our family-run agency has helped Massachusetts homeowners understand their insurance options and make informed decisions about protecting their homes and financial future.

A strong protection plan includes both prevention and preparation. Fire safety measures help reduce risks, while homeowners insurance helps provide financial protection when unexpected situations occur.

Because protecting your home is not just about preventing problems—it's about being prepared if they happen.

Every homeowner should make fire safety and insurance reviews part of their protection plan — choose Calfee Insurance.

Fire Safety Starts at Home: Protect Your Property with Prevention and the Right Insurance Coverage — with Calfee Insurance

Fire Safety Is an Important Part of Homeownership

A home is one of the most valuable investments many people will ever make. Beyond its financial value, it is where families gather, memories are created, and everyday life unfolds. Because of its importance, protecting a home should always be a priority.

One of the most significant risks homeowners face is fire. While many house fires can be prevented, they can occur unexpectedly and have devastating consequences. Even a small fire can cause substantial damage to a home's structure, personal belongings, and property. In more serious situations, recovery can take months and involve significant financial costs.

The good news is that many fire risks can be reduced through awareness, preparation, and regular home maintenance. Taking proactive steps today can help improve safety and potentially reduce the likelihood of a fire-related emergency.

Fire safety is not about living in fear of what might happen. It is about creating a safer environment and being prepared for the unexpected.

Simple Fire Safety Practices Every Homeowner Should Follow

Many effective fire prevention measures are simple and inexpensive to implement.

One of the most important steps homeowners can take is ensuring that smoke alarms are installed and functioning properly. Smoke alarms should be tested regularly, and batteries should be replaced according to manufacturer recommendations. Working smoke alarms provide early warning and can play a critical role during an emergency.

Electrical safety is another important consideration. Damaged cords, overloaded outlets, and outdated electrical systems can increase fire risks. Homeowners should inspect cords regularly and avoid using extension cords as permanent solutions for powering devices.

Kitchen safety also deserves attention. Cooking-related incidents are among the most common causes of residential fires. Staying attentive while cooking, keeping flammable items away from heat sources, and maintaining clean cooking areas can help reduce risks.

Homeowners should also consider creating a family fire escape plan. Every member of the household should know how to exit the home safely and where to meet outside in the event of an emergency. Practicing the plan periodically can help ensure everyone knows what to do if a fire occurs.

These simple precautions may seem small, but together they can make a meaningful difference in protecting a home and the people inside it.

Why Home Insurance Matters in Fire Preparedness

While prevention is essential, not every fire can be avoided. This is why homeowners insurance plays an important role in protecting against the financial impact of unexpected events.

Insurance is designed to help provide financial protection when covered losses occur. In the event of a covered fire-related loss, insurance may help address damage to the home, personal belongings, and other covered expenses according to policy terms and conditions.

Many homeowners focus on fire prevention but spend less time reviewing their insurance coverage. However, understanding your policy before an emergency occurs can be just as important as maintaining smoke alarms or creating an escape plan.

A coverage review can help homeowners better understand policy limits, deductibles, and available protection options. It can also provide an opportunity to determine whether current coverage continues to align with the property's value and the homeowner's needs.

As homes change over time through renovations, additions, or rising construction costs, insurance needs may change as well. Periodic reviews help ensure that coverage remains appropriate and up to date.

Being prepared means addressing both physical safety and financial protection.

Protect What Matters Most with Calfee Insurance

Fire safety begins with prevention, but preparation goes beyond installing smoke alarms and creating emergency plans. It also includes making sure you understand your homeowners insurance coverage and how it can help support recovery after covered losses.

At Calfee Insurance, we have been helping Massachusetts homeowners protect what matters most since 1980. As a family-run agency, we understand the importance of safeguarding not only homes, but also the families, memories, and financial futures connected to them.

Our team works with homeowners to review coverage options, answer questions, and help ensure they have a clear understanding of their protection. Whether you are a first-time homeowner or have owned your property for years, taking time to review your coverage is an important part of responsible homeownership.

No one expects a fire to occur, but preparation can make a significant difference if the unexpected happens.

Because protecting your home involves more than preventing risks—it involves preparing for them as well.

This blog is intended to promote local events, businesses & non-profit organizations through out our network.

Our mission is to promote our clients and help them connect AND build longstanding relationships with members of the local community.

The Arthur D. Calfee Insurance Agency, Inc., is a 2nd generation, family run insurance agency with offices located in Falmouth & North Falmouth, Cape Cod, MA.  Arthur began the business in 1980 out of his house, then soon grew to serving over 3,000 people in the area.  The agency can offer various competitive Car, Home, Business, Disability & Life Insurance policies.  Over the years, the agency has built strong relationships with various insurance companies to offer the most competitive policies in the region.  They work with such companies as Arbella, Safety, Encompass, UPC, Plymouth Rock, Travelers, Preferred Mutual, CNA, Lloyds of London, Scottsdale, Lexington, & MPIUA just to name a few.

Davidson Calfee, President of Calfee Insurance grew up in the insurance business by working part-time in the family business.

He obtained his bachelor of science degree and became the Alumni Class Director at the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel & Restaurant Management at the University of Houston, TX.  Davidson learned quickly about flood insurance after the  2001 Tropical Storm Allison in Houston when the entire city was under water.

After college, Davidson completed his Marketing Management Training Program at the Isle of Capri Casino Resort & Hotel located along the Gulf Coast in Biloxi, Mississippi.  Then Davidson learned more about the insurance industry when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in September, 2005.

Learning from his past experiences with natural catastrophes, Davidson grew a natural passion to help his home town Cape Cod residents understand insurance and it's complexities.

Quickly settling on Cape Cod after the Katrina, Davidson became the Founding Chairman of the Falmouth Young Professionals, President ofBNI - Team Advantage, Treasurer of the Falmouth Education Committeeand the Director of Automation with the Cape Cod Insurance Agent's Association.  In the past, Davidson has held positions such as the Ambassador to the Conrad N. Hilton College, the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce and the Canal Region Chamber of Commerce.

In 2012, the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce voted him on to theirBoard of Directors.  The Falmouth Community Television Stationawarded Davidson with their prestigious "Volunteer of the Year" award during their Annual Dinner for many events & special productions including The Village Green, Live Election Coverage, Young Professional Television and special government meetings, to name a few.

Arthur D. Calfee, Davidson's father and founder of Calfee Insurance, has 50 years of experience in the insurance industry.

He worked in the Boston claims office of the Boston Old Colony Insurance Company from 1960 to 1966, when he moved to Falmouth.

After 14 years working for a local agency, Art opened his own agency in 1980.

In 1988 he purchased the Everitt W. Noyes Insurance Agency in North Falmouth.
In 1990 he purchased the Gordon W. Bryden Insurance Agency and merged it into the North Falmouth office.
